The early riser grabs two fortunes.
Proverbs have no individual author. They passed orally through generations and were only written down from the nineteenth century onward, when collectors of folk literature began systematically recording what until then had been carried in memory. The sayings gathered here come from Croatian oral tradition and often exist in several variants depending on the region.
About this theme: Motivation
Motivation is the youngest idea in this collection — it enters use as a psychological term only in the twentieth century. Older writers describe the same thing with a different vocabulary: will, duty, habit. That difference in words hides a difference in assumption. Motivation is understood as a state that comes and goes; habit as something built regardless of the state.
